Difference Between Divorce and Dissolution

In Ohio, there are two legal options available to end your marriage: divorce or dissolution of marriage. A divorce is typically a contested proceeding, meaning you and your spouse disagree on one or all of the issues. Dissolution, on the other hand, is when the parties agree on all of the terms. Dissolution can be quicker and less contentious, but there are benefits to filing for divorce, rather than dissolution. In a divorce, you can ask the court for temporary orders to provide income and parenting plans until the divorce is finalized. Additionally, if you start out as dissolution and can't agree, you will have to start over and convert it from dissolution to divorce.
